In 1985, just as Madonna was becoming the biggest female pop star in the world, nude photographs taken years before her rise to fame surfaced and were published without her approval. “SO WHAT!”
The New York Post turned her unapologetic reaction into one of the decade’s most memorable front pages: “MADONNA ON NUDE PIX: SO WHAT!” Rather than allowing the photographs to become a scandal that defined her, Madonna refused to express shame or give the controversy the power the press expected.
The moment became an early example of the defiance that would define her career.
