Paradise — Cambridge, MA (1971–2018)

Opened in 1971 in Central Square, Paradise became one of the longest-running and most significant LGBTQ+ bars in the Boston/Cambridge area—a nightlife institution that lasted nearly five decades. Part dance club, part neighborhood gathering place, it evolved alongside generations of queer life in Cambridge while holding onto its identity as a welcoming, community-driven space.

Known for its dance floor, drag shows, cabaret nights, and eclectic crowd, Paradise drew students, artists, locals, and longtime regulars into a venue that balanced high-energy nightlife with a familiar, lived-in atmosphere. It wasn’t just a stop on the scene—it was the scene for many people across the region.

Through the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and well into the 2000s, Paradise remained a constant as other venues came and went. Its longevity made it something rare: a place that connected multiple eras of LGBTQ+ history under one roof.

When it finally closed in 2018, it marked the end of one of New England’s most enduring queer spaces—a bar deeply tied to the social and cultural fabric of Cambridge.
