The Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia. Inspired by the scouting movement she encountered in the United Kingdom, Low created an organization designed specifically for girls—at a time when opportunities for leadership, outdoor activity, and civic engagement were largely reserved for boys.
From the beginning, Girl Scouts emphasized self-reliance, community service, skill-building, and confidence. Early troops learned camping, first aid, and practical trades alongside arts and teamwork. The organization steadily expanded across the United States, becoming one of the largest and most influential youth programs for girls.
