Wild Goose — San Francisco, CA (1970s–1980s)
Located at 1488 Pine Street near Polk, the Wild Goose was part of San Francisco’s pre-Castro gay nightlife scene—when Polk Street served as the city’s primary LGBTQ+ corridor. Operating during the ’70s and into the ’80s, it existed within a dense network of bars, restaurants, bookstores, and bathhouses that made the neighborhood feel alive at nearly every hour.
The Wild Goose carried that classic neighborhood-bar atmosphere: social, familiar, and rooted in regulars who treated it as part of their routine. It wasn’t built around spectacle or massive dance floors—it was one of the many places that helped hold the scene together through consistency and presence.
Its location placed it squarely within a pivotal chapter of San Francisco queer history, when visibility was expanding and nightlife spaces were becoming central gathering points for community and connection.
