From the mid-’70s to the 21st century, Vulcan Steam & Sauna was more than just a bathhouse—it was a lifeline for San Diego’s gay community. Founded in 1974 by Frank Stiriti, it stood at 805 W. Cedar Street as a 24/7, cash-only sanctuary where men could gather, connect, and relax in a time when queer spaces were rare.
During the AIDS crisis, Vulcan didn’t shut down—it stepped up. Frank and his team provided free condoms, educational materials, and hosted anonymous HIV testing, turning the venue into an essential informational and emotional support hub. After 39 fearless years, the doors closed in 2013, marking the end of an era for San Diego’s gay nightlife.
I use Bella + Canvas 3001 Unisex tees for all of my designs. They are a soft and light cotton. If you love another brand, please let me know and I can see if I can source it. I can also do my designs on tanks, long sleeve tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and posters. Just reach out with any custom requests and I'll gladly help you out. I do like large prints, but if you want the design scaled down, please contact me before placing an order and I can send you some mock ups.
