The original “Viva Zapata” tees circulated in the 1970s — a decade still vibrating from the civil rights movement, Chicano activism, anti-war protests, and student uprisings. The phrase honors Emiliano Zapata, the Mexican revolutionary (1879–1919) who became an enduring symbol of land rights, resistance, and grassroots rebellion.
By the ’70s, Zapata’s image had transcended history books. His mustache, sombrero, and crossed bandoliers became iconography — printed on posters, murals, and radical T-shirts worn by organizers, artists, punks, and political romantics alike.
