During the late 1980s, Acapulco was one of the world's great tropical playgrounds, attracting international travelers looking for sunshine, spectacular beaches, and a nightlife scene that knew how to have a good time. And for gay men, Villa Hombre offered a particularly appealing version of paradise.

Located at Avenida Las Conchas 10 in Acapulco's Fraccionamiento Farallón neighborhood, Villa Hombre was a gay resort hotel, restaurant, and bar catering exclusively to men. Just a short distance from the famous Condesa Beach, it was perfectly situated near the center of the city's gay beach and nightlife scene.

And this wasn't your average seaside hotel. Villa Hombre featured a Spanish-style setting, swimming pool, spa, sun terrace, and an on-site restaurant and bar. Best of all, clothing was optional, including nude swimming. Apparently, packing light was strongly encouraged.

The resort advertised in American gay publications, including the Bay Area Reporter and Houston's Montrose Voice, attracting visitors from across the United States and beyond. In 1989, rooms started at approximately $25 to $40 per night, making a tropical gay getaway surprisingly affordable.

At a time when openly gay accommodations were far less common, places like Villa Hombre offered something especially valuable: the freedom to vacation among other gay men without worrying about disapproving hotel guests, awkward explanations, or whether it was acceptable to hold another man's hand by the pool.

And Acapulco itself was magnificent. Dramatic cliffs, Pacific sunsets, tropical heat, and a famously decadent nightlife scene made it an ideal destination for men looking to escape the ordinary. Villa Hombre simply removed a few more restrictions.
