Before every teen movie heroine was expected to be likable, there was Veronica Sawyer.
Played by Winona Ryder in Heathers, Veronica is smart, sarcastic, observant, and deeply unimpressed by the social hierarchy surrounding her. She moves through Westerburg High with one foot inside the popular crowd and the other already looking for the exit.
What makes Veronica endure is that she isn’t a simple rebel. She wants out, but she’s also complicit. She sees through the cruelty around her, yet still participates in it. That tension gives Heathers its bite—and makes Veronica feel far more human than the usual outsider heroine.
Visually, she’s pure late-’80s cult cinema: blue blazers, dark lipstick, school-girl tailoring, oversized shoulders, and that unmistakable Winona expression that says she has already judged the entire room.
Over time, Veronica became an icon for audiences drawn to characters who are intelligent, alienated, morally messy, and unwilling to play along forever. Heathers itself only grew in reputation, becoming one of the defining black comedies of the decade.
