Opened in 1989, Connection became one of Berlin’s longest-running gay clubs, occupying Fuggerstraße 33 in the heart of Schöneberg’s historic queer district. The location had already housed the legendary Chez Romy Haag, giving the address a nightlife pedigree before Connection ever switched on its lights.
Across multiple levels, the club mixed pop, house, dance, and electronic music with drag performances, themed parties, and the particular freedom for which Berlin nightlife became famous. Below the dance floors was the Twilight Zone, a dark cruising area that made the club’s name feel less like branding and more like a suggestion.
Connection arrived the same year the Berlin Wall fell, at the beginning of a remarkable transformation in the city. Reunification opened abandoned spaces and helped create a new club culture built around experimentation, sexual openness, and communities that had long existed outside conventional society. Connection was more polished than some of the improvised warehouse clubs, but it shared their belief that nightlife could provide both escape and belonging.
For more than three decades, it attracted locals, tourists, longtime regulars, and anyone prepared to keep dancing well after midnight. By its thirtieth anniversary in 2019, Connection was widely regarded as an institution within Berlin’s gay district.
