Founded in 1984 by Marty Chernoff, Tracks quickly became more than just a gay nightclub—it was an inclusive, high-energy space that brought together people from all walks of life. Located in a converted warehouse at 1111 First Street SE, it was known for its massive dance floor, state-of-the-art lighting and sound, and even a video room—features that set it apart from anything else in the city.

Tracks wasn’t just a club—it was a scene. Outside, guests could hang out on the patio, play volleyball in a sand court, cool off in a shallow pool, or grab drinks and grilled food from the outdoor bar. Inside, it pulsed with music and energy, hosting live performances from icons like Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston, Crystal Waters, and The Village People.

What made Tracks truly unique was its embrace of diversity. It welcomed everyone—gay, straight, Black, white, men, women, Latinos, Asians—while proudly centering itself as a gay space. Themed nights created welcoming environments for specific groups, like Black gay men on Sundays and women’s nights on Tuesdays, making it feel like home for communities that often didn’t have one.

Tracks wasn’t just a party—it was a cultural anchor and a refuge. It offered connection, joy, and a sense of belonging at a time when that wasn’t always easy to find. Though it closed in 1999, the spirit of Tracks still echoes in DC’s nightlife and in the lives it touched.
