I'm a Toys “R” Us Kid! — Vintage 1980s Tee

If you grew up in the 1980s, few things were more exciting than a trip to Toys “R” Us. The enormous aisles, the towering shelves, the bicycles hanging overhead, and the wonderful possibility that your parents might actually buy you something.

And then there was Geoffrey the Giraffe, the smiling mascot of a toy-store empire that somehow managed to make every other store seem completely pointless.

The famous “I Don't Wanna Grow Up, I'm a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid” advertising jingle became one of the most recognizable commercial songs of the decade. Introduced in the early 1980s, it was practically impossible to escape, playing endlessly on television and permanently lodging itself in the brains of an entire generation.

And the commercials were magnificent. Smiling children, mountains of toys, brightly colored graphics, and the promise that Toys “R” Us had everything from bicycles to video games. For kids growing up with Star Wars figures, Cabbage Patch Kids, Transformers, Barbie, G.I. Joe, and Nintendo, it really did feel like paradise.

But the slogan had an appeal that went well beyond childhood. “I don't wanna grow up” became a wonderfully universal sentiment, particularly for anyone who reached adulthood and discovered that paying bills, going to work, and behaving responsibly were considerably less entertaining than advertised.

There was something gloriously excessive about the original Toys “R” Us experience. It wasn't a carefully curated boutique or a tasteful little toy shop. It was an enormous fluorescent wonderland of plastic, cardboard, batteries, and pure American consumerism. And we absolutely loved it.
