Tower Theater — Philadelphia Tee (1927–2019)
Opened in 1927 in Upper Darby just outside Philadelphia, the Tower Theater evolved from an ornate movie palace into one of America’s most legendary rock venues. By the 1970s—the era of this classic logo—it had become a defining stop for major touring acts and a cornerstone of East Coast concert culture.
The Tower’s reputation exploded during the rock era, hosting artists like Bowie, Springsteen, Parliament-Funkadelic, Lou Reed, Genesis, and countless others under its massive art deco ceiling. The atmosphere was pure vintage concert history: cigarette smoke, glowing marquees, ticket lines wrapped around the block, and audiences packed shoulder to shoulder inside one of the best-sounding rooms in the region.
The geometric ’70s-era logo captured that transition perfectly—old movie-palace grandeur colliding with the raw energy of live rock shows.
For decades, the Tower remained one of the Philadelphia area’s most beloved venues before closing in 2019, ending a remarkable 92-year run.
