Tool Box — Denver Gay Leather Bar

Denver has a long history of gay leather bars, cowboy hangouts, and wonderfully masculine watering holes, and Tool Box was part of that world. With a name that was equal parts hardware store and sexual innuendo, it wasn't exactly trying to attract the country-club crowd.

Gay leather culture flourished during the 1970s and 1980s, when bars catering to men in leather, Levi's, boots, and uniforms became important gathering places in cities across America. Denver's own combination of Western ruggedness and urban gay nightlife made it a particularly natural fit.

The appeal was straightforward. A cold beer, a dark bar, a room full of men, and an atmosphere where masculinity could be explored, exaggerated, and enjoyed on entirely different terms than the straight world allowed.

Leather bars also played an important role in building gay community. Beyond the cruising and occasional misbehavior, they helped connect friends, partners, motorcycle enthusiasts, and men who found a sense of belonging in a culture with its own traditions, codes, and unmistakable dress requirements.

And let's appreciate that name for a moment. Tool Box. A perfectly respectable name for a hardware store, and an absolutely magnificent name for a gay leather bar. The double entendre was doing most of the advertising.
