THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS — Woody Guthrie
Sometimes the best graphic is just a few words written by hand.
In the early 1940s, American folk singer Woody Guthrie began putting the words “THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS” on his guitar. No logo, no polished typography—just a blunt handwritten statement attached to the instrument he used to tell stories about workers, migrants, poverty, racism, war, and ordinary people getting pushed around.
Guthrie believed music could actually do something. During World War II, his anti-fascism wasn't metaphorical or fashionable—he wrote and performed songs directly opposing fascism, including “Tear the Fascists Down.” The guitar became an extension of that idea: the machine wasn't a weapon because it fired bullets. Its weapon was the message.
