The Rushes — Provincetown, MA (1986)

For one brief moment in the mid-1980s, Provincetown had a place called The Rushes.

Operating for what appears to have been just a single season in 1986, The Rushes was a gay men’s resort-style bathhouse advertised as a secluded getaway — promising privacy, a pool, and a place to unwind in the height of P-town summer.

It arrived during a complicated time. By the mid-1980s, the AIDS crisis had already reshaped queer nightlife and bathhouse culture across the country. Yet Provincetown remained a seasonal refuge — a place where men still traveled each summer to relax, reconnect, and reclaim joy for a few weeks by the sea.

But the experiment was short-lived. Records suggest the venue appeared in travel guides in 1986 and vanished by the following summer, leaving behind only fragments of memory and the occasional poster or mention in archival listings.

Even the property itself changed — the building that once housed The Rushes is now part of a condominium complex, another quiet transformation in a town that constantly reinvents its spaces.
