The Post — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1976–2010)

For 34 years, The Post was part of the fabric of Philadelphia gay nightlife—a neighborhood bar that lasted long enough to see the city and its LGBTQ+ community transformed around it.

Opening in 1976, The Post belonged to the generation of gay bars that flourished as Philadelphia’s queer community became increasingly visible after Stonewall. These weren't simply places for a drink. Before apps, social media, and widespread acceptance, bars provided the physical infrastructure of gay life: somewhere to meet friends, find a date, cruise, exchange information, and simply spend an evening among your own.

The Post survived through remarkably different eras—from the exuberance of late-1970s gay liberation and disco through the devastation of the AIDS epidemic and into the increasingly visible LGBTQ+ culture of the 1990s and 2000s. A 34-year run meant generations of Philadelphia gay men passed through its doors.

Its history also belongs to the larger story of Philadelphia’s changing queer geography. Long before “the Gayborhood” became a recognizable brand, gay establishments were scattered throughout Center City, often identified through little more than word of mouth, discreet signage, and listings in local gay publications.

When The Post finally closed in 2010, another piece of old Philadelphia gay nightlife disappeared with it. Today, its advertisements, logos, photographs, and memorabilia preserve the memory of the ordinary neighborhood bars that quietly sustained queer communities for decades.
