The Pharr Library (Atlanta Gay Club/80's and 90's)

For Atlanta’s fashionable gay crowd, the Pharr Library was less about checking out books than checking out the room.

Located at 550 Pharr Road, the club emerged as a major gay nightlife destination in the early 1980s after beginning as a straight nightclub. Its dance floor, performances, and polished Buckhead setting attracted an affluent, style-conscious clientele from across the city. Period advertisements promoted special events and revues, while archival photographs preserve performers known as the “Pharr Library Boys.”

The bar became famous for its so-called “S and M” crowd—“stand and model.” Looking good, being seen, and surveying the competition were all part of the evening. Beneath the glamour, however, the Pharr Library still provided something essential: a place where gay Atlantans could gather openly, build friendships, and find community during years when LGBTQ+ social life remained centered largely around bars.

Its Buckhead location also made it distinctive. While much of Atlanta’s queer nightlife clustered around Midtown and Cheshire Bridge Road, the Pharr Library offered a more polished variation on the gay disco—equal parts dance club, showroom, and social parade.
