The Other Side — Boston, MA (1970s–1980s)

Located at 78 Broadway in South Boston, The Other Side was one of the city’s best-known gay discos during the late ’70s and into the ’80s—a time when dance clubs became central to queer nightlife and visibility. Big sound, packed floors, and late nights gave the club its energy, drawing crowds from across Boston and beyond.

The name itself carried a wink—part invitation, part statement—and the atmosphere reflected the era’s shift toward larger, more expressive nightlife spaces. DJs, lights, and nonstop dance music turned the club into a destination rather than just a neighborhood stop.

At a time when LGBTQ+ spaces still carried risk and importance in equal measure, discos like The Other Side offered something expansive: room to gather, move, and be visible together.
