The Mineshaft — Miami, Florida (1970s–1990s)

Dark, coded, and unmistakably part of the leather tradition, The Mineshaft in Miami carried forward a name already steeped in underground legend. Inspired by the original New York club, it became part of Miami’s own leather and fetish scene, operating through the 1970s and 1990s as a space that embraced a more stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to nightlife.

Like its namesake, the Miami Mineshaft leaned into a masculine, dress-coded atmosphere—denim, leather, and workwear over anything polished or preppy. The focus wasn’t on spectacle or dance floors, but on environment: low lighting, tight spaces, and an energy shaped entirely by the crowd.

The original Mineshaft in New York, open from 1976 to 1985, helped define the leather bar as a distinctly coded, hyper-masculine space, with strict dress rules and a reputation that made it legendary worldwide . Bars like the Miami location carried that influence forward—adapting it to new cities while maintaining the same core ethos.
