The Malebox — Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Located at 825 East Sunrise Boulevard, the Malebox was part of Fort Lauderdale’s busy gay nightlife scene from the 1980s into the 1990s.
Advertised as a video and cruise bar, the Malebox catered primarily to gay men with a name that left little doubt about the intended audience. It belonged to an era when Fort Lauderdale supported an extensive network of gay bars, discos, leather clubs, bathhouses, hotels, and adult businesses serving both South Florida locals and visitors from around the country.
Before Wilton Manors emerged as the region’s primary LGBTQ+ nightlife district, gay establishments were scattered throughout Fort Lauderdale. Places like the Malebox helped make the city a major queer destination, offering spaces for cruising, conversation, and community at a time when openly gay venues still carried a particular importance.
