Before Boystown became Chicago’s primary nightlife hub, the Gold Coast and Near North Side had their own constellation of gay bars — and one of the late-night standouts was The Loading Zone at 46 E. Oak Street.
The Loading Zone shows up in Chicago LGBTQ nightlife listings by the mid-1980s, already operating as a bar known for music, video screens, and a steady crowd in the Oak Street strip of clubs and lounges.
Like many bars of its era, the exact opening date isn’t well documented, but it was clearly active during the 1980s and into the early 1990s, part of a generation of venues that helped bridge Chicago’s earlier downtown gay scene with the later rise of Lakeview and Halsted nightlife.
