Located in South St. Louis near California and Magnolia Avenues, the Kit Kat Klub/Kitty Kat Klub was one of the city’s best-known lesbian bars for over a decade and a half. Operating from roughly 1976 through 1992, it served as a consistent, deeply valued gathering space for lesbians and their friends during a time when dedicated women’s spaces were far less common.
Part of the broader Fox Park nightlife area, the Kit Kat Klub carried a neighborhood feel—social, familiar, and built around the people who returned week after week. It wasn’t about spectacle or trends; it was about having a place that felt safe, welcoming, and truly theirs.
People remembered it with affection and complexity, sometimes calling it a “real sweet pain”—a phrase that captured both the joy of community and the challenges of maintaining queer spaces during that era.
Alongside venues like the Plush Pony, the Kit Kat Klub became part of a now largely vanished world of in-person lesbian social culture—bars that functioned not just as nightlife, but as vital community anchors.
