The Iron Hinge — Detroit, Michigan (1970–1976)
In early-1970s Detroit, The Iron Hinge—also known simply as The Hinge—was one of the places to be.
Located at 7610 Woodward Avenue, The Iron Hinge operated as a gay nightspot from approximately 1970 to 1976. Period gay guides described it as a packed, friendly, all-gay club with a young crowd, dancing, DJs, and drag shows. A 1971 guide was particularly enthusiastic, labeling it simply “A Must!”
The Hinge was also part of something bigger happening in Detroit nightlife. An advertisement in the Detroit Gay Liberator from May 1970 promoted a DJ seven nights a week, making the club one of the early documented examples of DJ-driven gay nightlife in Michigan—right as the modern dance-club culture was beginning to emerge in cities across America.
By 1973, gay travel guides described “Ye Iron Hinge” as a popular destination with DJs and regular drag shows. Performers who passed through the club became part of Detroit's vibrant female-impersonation and drag scene; Elaine St. Jacques, for example, was crowned Miss Iron Hinge in 1974.
The location also reflects the changing geography of queer Detroit. Gay nightlife gradually migrated from downtown northward along Woodward Avenue, eventually establishing another major center around Palmer Park. The Iron Hinge belonged squarely to that Woodward Avenue chapter.
After the Hinge closed, neighboring Lelli's restaurant expanded into the former club space in 1977—leaving behind little physical evidence of what had once been one of Detroit's liveliest gay rooms.
