Hide & Seek — Colorado Springs, Colorado (1969–2005)
For an extraordinary 36 years, Hide & Seek provided Colorado Springs with something that was once remarkably difficult to find: a place for LGBTQ+ people to find one another.
Opening in 1969, the club began operating the same year as the Stonewall uprising, when openly gay establishments still faced police harassment, discrimination, and the very real possibility that simply being seen entering one could have consequences. In conservative Colorado Springs, having a dedicated gay gathering place carried particular significance.
The name Hide & Seek feels almost too perfect for the era. Gay life often required exactly that balance—hiding when necessary while continually seeking community, friendship, love, and someplace where being yourself didn't need an explanation.
Over the decades, Hide & Seek became a familiar part of local LGBTQ+ nightlife, surviving enormous changes in both the community and the country around it. Generations passed through its doors for drinks, dancing, drag, cruising, celebrations, and the ordinary evenings that made a neighborhood bar feel like home.
Its long run also connected remarkably different chapters of queer history: gay liberation in the 1970s, the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and '90s, and the increasing visibility of LGBTQ+ life by the beginning of the new millennium. Through all of it, the club remained a physical place where Colorado Springs' queer community could gather.
When Hide & Seek closed in 2005, it ended a remarkable run stretching from Stonewall to the 21st century.
