The Gauntlet II — Los Angeles, CA (1965–2005)

Silver Lake leather history.

For decades in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood, one name stood at the center of the city’s leather scene: The Gauntlet II.

Operating from 1965 to 2005, the bar was part of the legendary cluster of leather and motorcycle venues that made Silver Lake the heart of LA’s fetish nightlife during the late 20th century. Long before the internet mapped queer spaces, bars like The Gauntlet II were known through word of mouth, flyers, and the unmistakable look of the crowd walking through the door.

The Gauntlet II embraced the raw aesthetic of the leather community and quickly became a gathering place for bikers, leathermen, and regulars who understood the culture’s codes. Its long run meant it witnessed nearly every chapter of modern queer nightlife in Los Angeles — from the liberation era of the 1960s and 70s to the challenges of the AIDS crisis and the changes of the early 2000s.
