Across from MacArthur Park at 2709 W. 6th Street, The Fallen Angel was part of Los Angeles’ wonderfully sprawling gay bar scene at the dawn of the 1970s.

The Fallen Angel was already operating by 1970, appearing regularly in the gay guides and newspapers of the period. Unlike the glamorous clubs of Hollywood or the emerging leather scene around Silver Lake, this was a neighborhood beer bar—unpretentious, local, and unmistakably gay.

A contemporary description called it a place that “keeps grinding on year after year,” noting that its location across from MacArthur Park attracted a crowd unlike anywhere else in the city. Another simply categorized it as a bear bar—a particularly interesting description decades before “bear” became the established gay identity and subculture we know today.

And that’s what makes places like The Fallen Angel worth remembering. Gay Los Angeles wasn't confined to West Hollywood. Bars were scattered through Westlake, Silver Lake, Hollywood, downtown, and neighborhoods all over the city, creating an unofficial network where gay men could meet, drink, cruise, and find community.

Even the surviving ephemera tells part of the story. The Fallen Angel is among the long-gone Los Angeles gay bars preserved through old matchbooks, advertisements, directories, and bar memorabilia—sometimes the only physical evidence that these places ever existed.
