The Double Header, located at 407 2nd Avenue Extension South in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, holds a distinguished place in LGBTQ+ history. Established in 1934 by Joseph Bellotti Sr., it is recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in the United States, serving the community until its closure in December 2015.
Initially, the bar was not exclusively gay-owned, but it became a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ patrons during a time when such establishments were rare and often targeted. The Double Header gained a reputation for its inclusive atmosphere, hosting drag shows and featuring performances by groups like the all-female oompah band, the Cracker Barrels.
Beneath the Double Header, the basement housed The Casino, a gay dance club operating from the 1930s to the 1950s. This venue was popular among drag queens and contributed to the LGBTQ+ friendly environment that characterized the Double Header.
Throughout its history, the Double Header served as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, providing a space for socialization and expression during periods of widespread discrimination. Its longevity and significance have cemented its status as a landmark in Seattle's queer history.
