The Copa — Fort Lauderdale, Florida (1974–2005)
Big, bold, and built for the dance floor, The Copa was one of Fort Lauderdale’s most important gay nightclubs—a place that helped define the city’s rise as a major LGBTQ destination. Emerging in the early-to-mid 1970s, it quickly became a centerpiece of the growing South Florida scene.
By the 1980s and 1990s, The Copa was in full stride—a large-scale disco and dance club where music, lights, and crowd energy carried the night. Packed weekends, DJs, and a mix of locals and tourists made it a must-stop in a city that was rapidly becoming known for gay travel and nightlife.
The club’s influence stretched far beyond one room—it was part of a broader movement that turned Fort Lauderdale into a national gay resort destination, with venues like The Copa anchoring the nightlife.
After decades as a staple of the scene, The Copa’s original location was ultimately lost in 2005, marking the end of one of the city’s most iconic clubs.
