Club 927 — Portland, Oregon (1980 – 1999)

Operating in Portland during the 1980s and into the 1990s, Club 927 was one of the city’s important lesbian bars, offering a rare and necessary space for queer women at a time when few existed — even in progressive-leaning cities.

Known for its unapologetically social, women-centered atmosphere, Club 927 functioned as far more than a nightclub. It was a meeting place, refuge, and organizing ground where women came to dance, drink, talk politics, build relationships, and form chosen family. Like many lesbian bars of the era, it operated with resilience and discretion, navigating surveillance, sexism, and economic pressure simply to keep the doors open.
