The Cartwheel Inn was one of New Hope’s most iconic gay bars, a sprawling multi-level haven that pulsed with queer energy from the 1970s until its untimely end in 2005. Tucked inside a rustic stone building just outside town, it began as a cozy country tavern and blossomed into a high-glam, full-spectrum nightclub. On any given night, you could find locals and city escapees dancing under flashing lights, sipping cocktails in the piano bar, or catching a drag show before hitting the outdoor patio.
The Cartwheel wasn’t just a place to party—it was a full-on queer cultural compound. It housed a restaurant, a video lounge (one of the first of its kind), and a buzzing dance floor that made it the centerpiece of New Hope’s legendary LGBTQ+ scene. Alongside The Raven and The Prelude, The Cartwheel helped shape the town’s reputation as a gay getaway long before it was trendy.
In April 2005, a devastating fire destroyed the Cartwheel and marked the end of an era. Though the building was never rebuilt, its memory still lingers like glitter on hardwood floors—bold, joyful, and impossible to forget.
