The Caldron — San Francisco, California (1970s–1980s)
During the height of San Francisco’s liberated nightlife era, The Caldron was one of the city’s most infamous and talked-about underground clubs. Located in the South of Market (SoMa) district, the venue became known in the 1970s and early 1980s as a late-night destination for men seeking adventure, anonymity, and a very different kind of nightlife experience.
Inside, The Caldron embraced the dark, industrial atmosphere that defined many of SoMa’s clubs at the time—dim lighting, maze-like interiors, and an anything-goes spirit that reflected the era’s sense of sexual freedom following the gay liberation movement of the early 1970s. Alongside leather bars, bathhouses, and dance clubs, venues like The Caldron became part of the city’s famously uninhibited after-hours scene.
