When Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band premiered on stage in 1968 and hit the screen in 1970, it was nothing short of groundbreaking. At a time when queer characters were nearly invisible—or worse, caricatured—it offered an unflinching, witty, and deeply human portrayal of a group of gay men at a birthday party in New York City. Directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection), the film retained its razor-sharp dialogue and claustrophobic intimacy, preserving the raw emotions of the original stage play.
While some critics labeled it “controversial” or “too honest” in its portrayal of internalized homophobia and friendship under pressure, the movie became a milestone in queer cinema, paving the way for more authentic LGBTQ+ storytelling. Today, it stands as a time capsule of pre-Stonewall gay life—complete with all the camp, complexity, and candor of the era.
I use Bella + Canvas 3001 Unisex tees for all of my designs. They are a soft and light cotton. If you love another brand, please let me know and I can see if I can source it. I can also do my designs on tanks, long sleeve tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and posters. Just reach out with any custom requests and I'll gladly help you out. I do like large prints, but if you want the design scaled down, please contact me before placing an order and I can send you some mock ups.
