Tab Hunter — Portrait Tee (1950s Hollywood)
In the golden glow of 1950s Hollywood, few stars captured the era’s clean-cut charm like Tab Hunter.
Tall, blond, and effortlessly charismatic, Hunter quickly became one of Warner Bros.’ biggest young stars. His film roles in movies like Damn Yankees! and Battle Cry made him a household name, while fan magazines crowned him one of the decade’s most beloved teen idols.
He even topped the music charts — his 1957 single Young Love became a #1 hit, proving Hunter’s appeal stretched far beyond the movie screen.
But Tab Hunter’s story didn’t end with matinee-idol fame.
Decades later, Hunter became an important figure in LGBTQ history. In his 2005 memoir, he openly discussed being a gay man navigating the rigid expectations of 1950s Hollywood — an industry where studios carefully guarded stars’ public images and personal lives.
Rather than diminish his legacy, that honesty only deepened it. Hunter’s later life, including his long partnership with film producer Allan Glaser, helped reframe his career for a new generation who admired both the star and the man behind the image.
