I RAN INTO TAMMY FAYE AT THE MALL — Replica Novelty Tee
Few personalities embodied the wonderfully excessive spirit of 1980s America quite like Tammy Faye Bakker. The enormous eyelashes, the mascara, the big hair, the bigger personality, and an almost supernatural ability to cry without ever completely losing her eyeliner.
Alongside her husband Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye became one of the most recognizable faces of televangelism through The PTL Club, the hugely popular Christian television program that mixed religion, entertainment, celebrity interviews, and enough emotional drama to fill an entire season of Dynasty.
And then there was Heritage USA, the Bakkers' sprawling Christian theme park and resort in South Carolina, complete with hotels, shopping, entertainment, and a distinctly 1980s interpretation of religious luxury. It was part Disneyland, part shopping mall, and part evangelical fever dream.
But Tammy Faye was always more interesting than the empire surrounding her.
Behind the makeup and outrageous television persona was a woman with genuine warmth and an unexpectedly progressive attitude toward people her religious contemporaries often condemned. In 1985, she famously interviewed gay Christian minister and AIDS patient Steve Pieters on television, treating him with compassion and dignity at a time when much of evangelical America was responding to the AIDS crisis with fear and hostility.
That moment helped establish Tammy Faye as an unlikely gay icon, a status she embraced in later years. Between her emotional openness, spectacular appearance, and refusal to stop being herself, she became a beloved figure in queer camp culture.
