For more than three decades, Sutter’s Mill was one of San Francisco’s best-known downtown gay bars, serving the city’s Financial District crowd from 1965 to 1998.
Located near the office towers and business streets of downtown, the bar became a favorite stop for professionals winding down after work. Before the Castro fully emerged as the center of gay nightlife, places like Sutter’s Mill offered something different: a comfortable cocktail bar where the city’s gay community could gather in the middle of the workday world.
