Superstar Video — Castro, San Francisco (1980s–1990s)

More than a video store, Superstar Video was a cornerstone of the Castro during one of its most defining—and devastating—eras. Opening in the early 1980s under Patrick Henry, it quickly became a hub for queer film, culture, and connection at a time when representation was still hard to find.

Located on 18th Street before moving to a larger space on 17th, the shop built one of the most extensive collections of LGBTQ+ cinema anywhere—stocking titles that were often unavailable elsewhere, from cult classics to underground films.

But its role went far beyond movies. During the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Superstar Video became a lifeline—providing not just entertainment, but comfort and connection for many who were isolated or ill. The store also supported local activism, film culture, and community efforts, embedding itself deeply into the life of the neighborhood.

It was a place where culture, survival, and community all intersected—quietly, consistently, and meaningfully.
