Few movies could have been more perfectly engineered for the mid-1990s than Striptease.

Released in 1996, Striptease starred Demi Moore as Erin Grant, a former FBI secretary who takes a job dancing at a Miami strip club while fighting to regain custody of her daughter. Based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel, the film mixed crime, political corruption, comedy, and plenty of tabloid-ready provocation into one very ’90s package.

Much of the publicity centered on Moore, who was reportedly paid a record-breaking $12.5 million for the role, making her the highest-paid actress in Hollywood at the time. The figure became nearly as famous as the movie itself and helped turn Striptease into a full-blown media event months before audiences actually saw it.

The cast only added to the strange appeal: Burt Reynolds gives a gloriously unrestrained performance as Congressman David Dilbeck, while Ving Rhames, Armand Assante, and Robert Patrick round out a movie that never seems particularly interested in behaving itself.

Critics were brutal and the film became a favorite at the Razzies, but time has been considerably kinder to its particular brand of excess. Today, Striptease works as a wonderfully glossy artifact of 1990s Hollywood—when an adult studio comedy could arrive with a massive budget, an A-list star, and a promotional campaign practically impossible to avoid.
