Spit — New Wave Club Tee (1978–1992)

Before alternative music became mainstream, there was Spit.

Originally opened as Uncle Sam’s in Levittown, Long Island, the club reinvented itself as Spit and became one of the most important new wave and alternative music venues in the New York area during the late 1970s and 1980s. For an entire generation of Long Island music fans, Spit wasn't just a club—it was a rite of passage.

Known for its Friday-night new wave scene and its embrace of punk, post-punk, synth-pop, and alternative music, Spit helped introduce audiences to artists who would later become legends. Most famously, Duran Duran played their first-ever North American show there in September 1981. Performances by countless underground and emerging acts helped cement the venue's reputation as a place where you could see the future before everyone else did.
