SPECIAL — CBS Special Presentation Vintage Tee

If you were a kid in the 1970s or ’80s, this graphic meant one thing: something good was about to come on.

Beginning in 1973, CBS used its now-iconic “A CBS Special Presentation” opening before holiday shows, animated specials, awards broadcasts, and other special programming. Against a black screen, the word SPECIAL came spinning toward you in overlapping bands of yellow, orange, pink, and blue before snapping into place.

And then there was the music—that ridiculously dramatic burst of percussion and horns that could get you excited before you even knew what you were watching. The fanfare was adapted from “Call to Danger,” music composed by Morton Stevens for Hawaii Five-O.

For a generation, it became inseparable from television events like Charlie Brown, Garfield, holiday specials, the Grammys, and all those random network specials that actually felt special because you had one chance to watch them. No streaming. No DVR. If you missed it, you missed it.

The classic spinning SPECIAL sequence is generally dated 1973–1992, although its strongest association is definitely with ’70s and ’80s television.
