In the gritty, warehouse-lined streets of South of Market — before tech towers and condos reshaped the skyline — queer nightlife and social spaces flourished in the margins. One of the lesser-told but unforgettable chapters of that era was the South of Market Club at 205 6th Street, known locally simply as the Glory Hole Club.

Part of a constellation of after-hours and adult social venues that made SoMa a playground for San Francisco’s gay community in the 1970s and early 1980s, the South of Market Club was more than an address — it was a haven of freedom and anonymity at a time when queer spaces were often clandestine and coded. It showed up in guidebooks of the day alongside other nightlife icons, tucked into the industrial grid where art, sexual liberation, nightlife, leather culture, and community collided.
