Sliver — Vintage Movie Tee

Released in 1993, Sliver took the erotic thriller into one of the creepiest places imaginable: a luxury Manhattan apartment building where somebody is always watching.

Sharon Stone stars as Carly Norris, a recently divorced book editor who moves into an exclusive high-rise known as 113, only to discover that the building has a history of suspicious deaths—and that her neighbors know considerably more about her than they should. William Baldwin plays mysterious video-game designer Zeke Hawkins, while Tom Berenger is novelist Jack Landsford, giving Carly two possible love interests and two very good reasons not to trust anyone.

Based on the novel by Rosemary’s Baby author Ira Levin and written for the screen by Joe Eszterhas, Sliver arrived immediately after the enormous success of Basic Instinct. With Stone once again at the center of sex, murder, and suspicion, the movie became one of the defining artifacts of the early-’90s erotic-thriller boom.

The film’s real hook, however, is voyeurism. Hidden cameras allow Zeke to watch the private lives of virtually everyone in the building, turning ordinary apartments into a wall of secret television channels. Long before webcams, reality TV, social media, and smartphones made constant observation feel ordinary, Sliver was already asking what happens when watching other people becomes entertainment.

And visually, it is gloriously 1993: Sharon Stone in minimalist power dressing, enormous Manhattan interiors, sleek technology, nighttime city views, and enough polished surfaces to make absolutely everyone look suspicious.
