Released in 1983, Sleepaway Camp took the familiar summer-camp slasher formula and made it considerably stranger. Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, the film follows painfully shy Angela Baker as she arrives at Camp Arawak, where obnoxious campers and questionable counselors begin meeting increasingly gruesome ends.
What initially looks like another Friday the 13th-era slasher gradually reveals itself as something far more eccentric. Awkward dialogue, bizarre characters, dark humor, short shorts, crop tops, and an almost documentary-like glimpse of early-'80s summer-camp life have helped turn Sleepaway Camp from exploitation oddity into a genuine cult classic.
And then there's that ending.
The final revelation surrounding Angela has been debated for decades, particularly as attitudes toward transgender identity have evolved. Some viewers regard the film's use of gender variance as a shocking horror device rooted in outdated ideas that associate queerness or transness with deception and monstrosity. Others—including queer and trans horror fans—have reclaimed Angela as an unlikely cult figure, finding something compelling in a character whose identity was literally imposed upon them and whose story resists a simple modern label.
