Sansom Cinema — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1976–2014)
For nearly four decades, Sansom Cinema was a fixture of Philadelphia’s underground nightlife—a discreet but well-known adult theater located at 120 South 13th Street, in the heart of Center City. Operating from 1976 to 2014, it became part of the city’s late-night landscape, just steps from bars, restaurants, and the evolving LGBTQ scene.
Inside, Sansom Cinema reflected the classic adult theater experience of its era: continuous screenings, dimly lit interiors, and a steady flow of patrons passing through at all hours. For many, it was more than just a theater—it was part of a broader network of spaces that existed quietly alongside more visible nightlife, offering connection and anonymity in equal measure.
Its longevity made it one of the last remaining venues of its kind in the city, bridging generations—from the pre-digital era of the late 1970s through the internet age of the 2000s. By the time it closed in 2014, it marked the end of a chapter in Philadelphia nightlife history.
Today, the former site is home to Double Knot, a sleek sushi restaurant—an almost surreal contrast to the building’s past life.
