S.S. Friendship (Los Angeles)
S.S. Friendship (1938–2005) wasn’t just a gay bar—it was a survivor. Opening before World War II and lasting into the 21st century, S.S. Friendship quietly outlived nearly every version of Los Angeles queer nightlife that came and went around it.
Disguised in nautical camp and neighborhood understatement, the bar operated through eras when being visible could cost you your job, your freedom, or worse. It remained steady through pre-Stonewall caution, post-liberation expansion, the devastation of the AIDS crisis, and the slow reshaping of queer spaces at the turn of the millennium. Few places held that much lived experience under one roof.
