In Roman Polanski’s 1968 horror classic Rosemary's Baby, Ruth Gordon plays Minnie Castevet, the eccentric next-door neighbor who barges into Rosemary Woodhouse’s life with relentless chatter, questionable homemade desserts, and absolutely no understanding of personal boundaries.

With her loud clothes, jangling jewelry, nasal voice, and magnificent lack of tact, Minnie initially seems like comic relief. Gordon makes her funny enough that it’s easy to overlook just how sinister she actually is. As Rosemary’s pregnancy becomes increasingly disturbing, Minnie’s constant hovering begins to look considerably less neighborly.

Gordon’s performance is one of the great supporting turns in horror. She transforms a seemingly ridiculous New York busybody into something genuinely unnerving without ever losing the humor that makes Minnie so memorable. The performance earned Gordon the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with a Golden Globe.

More than fifty years later, Minnie has become a cult character in her own right. Her wardrobe alone deserves consideration: flamboyant prints, oversized accessories, unapologetic hair, and the general appearance of a woman who might invite herself into your apartment and then casually arrange the birth of Satan.
