For gay men on the Peninsula, Revenge offered something that otherwise often required a trip north to San Francisco.
Operating during the 1970s and 1980s, Revenge was part of the surprisingly rich network of gay bars and clubs that once existed throughout the Bay Area suburbs. In an era when San Francisco's Castro and South of Market districts dominated queer nightlife, places like Revenge provided an important alternative for people living in Redwood City, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and the surrounding Peninsula communities.
Like many suburban gay clubs, Revenge was both nightlife and meeting place. Before apps—and before being openly gay was possible in many workplaces and neighborhoods—the local bar was where people found one another. Drinks, dancing, cruising, and familiar faces made these establishments informal community centers as much as places for a Saturday night out.
