Rene’s — Tampa, Florida
Rene’s was part of Tampa’s colorful gay disco scene, when a night out meant dressing up, finding the right dance floor, and staying there until nobody cared what time it was.
Operating during the disco era, Rene’s catered to Tampa’s LGBTQ+ community at a time when dedicated gay spaces carried an importance far beyond nightlife. The combination of dancing, cruising, music, and familiar faces made clubs like Rene’s places where people could openly find one another in a city that was still considerably less accepting than it is today.
The late 1970s and early 1980s were especially important years for gay discos. Disco itself had deep roots in Black, Latino, and queer nightlife, and clubs became places where those communities could create their own style and social world. The music was joyous, physical, and liberating—and Tampa developed a lively scene of its own rather than simply borrowing from Miami or New York.
Rene’s belonged to that world of mirror balls, colored lights, tight jeans, polyester, and extended dance mixes, when the local gay disco could function simultaneously as dance floor, cruising ground, and community center.
