Queer — William S. Burroughs (1953 / published 1985)

Written in the early 1950s but withheld for decades, Queer is William S. Burroughs’ raw, unfiltered second novel and one of the earliest openly gay works of the Beat Generation. Set in the bars, back rooms, and expatriate enclaves of Mexico City, the book follows Lee, Burroughs’ thinly veiled alter ego, through obsession, desire, alienation, and the brutal vulnerability of unreciprocated love between men in a time when such feelings were rarely spoken aloud.

Long before queer literature had mainstream visibility, Queer captured same-sex longing without apology, romanticism, or moral framing. Its publication in 1985, at the height of the AIDS crisis, gave the novel an added layer of historical weight—suddenly a lost voice from the 1950s re-emerged as a testament to queer survival, desire, and emotional exposure across generations.
