By 1983, Provincetown Carnival had already become one of the most vibrant and visually expressive queer celebrations in the country—transforming Provincetown into a week-long explosion of costumes, performance, street theater, nightlife, and total creative freedom.
Provincetown itself carries a unique place in LGBTQ+ history. Long known as an artists’ colony and queer refuge at the edge of Cape Cod, the town became synonymous with self-expression, nightlife, chosen family, and summer escape. Carnival distilled all of that into one surreal annual celebration.
