One of the Southeast’s most legendary queer nightclubs, Power Company stood as a major destination on North Carolina’s gay nightlife map from the early 1980s until it closed in 2000. Known during its heyday as “the best gay club between DC and Atlanta,” the club drew crowds from all over the Carolinas and beyond for its expansive multi-level layout, thumping sound system, artful lighting, and packed dance floor that radiated energy and freedom.
Located on Main Street in Durham (now the site of Teasers), Power Company was more than a nightclub—it was a rare queer social hub in the South at a time when openly gay spaces were still limited. People remember it as a place where they could let loose and be themselves without harassment, and as an inclusive environment that welcomed diverse patrons, from longtime regulars to allies, interracial couples, and visitors from across the region.
